Vancouver College Fighting Irish wins!

The Vancouver College Fighting Irish won the 2020 BC Gr9 Provincials with a 53-44 win over the Okanagan Mission Huskies on the strength of a great game by Tourney MVP Mikyle Malabuyoc. OKM pulled within 4 late in the game but a Kai Gibbons‘ 3 sealed it for the Irish. Kai made the 2nd All-Star Team as well as Co-Player of the Game along with OKM’s Ryan Dekleva.
This is VC’s record 6th Gr9 Provincial Title and 2nd for Head Coach Ryan Shams.

The 3rd and 4th Place Game saw a record 4th overtime game in this 2020 Gr9 Provincials and with the never quit, Burnaby South Rebels in 2 of them. (1 triple, 2 doubles and a single OT in this year’s tourney).
Sir Charles Tupper Tigers late 4th quarter 7 pt run saw them lead by 3 in the dying seconds on an amazing 3 pt by First Team All-Star Jeremy Roldan only to have South’s Lex Paluma (a Tourney All-Star), answer with a 3 with 6 seconds on the clock to force the 1st OT. With 4 – 3’s traded by Roldan and South’s Thomas Suson, a bucket and 2 foul shots, the game went to the 2nd OT with South hanging on for the win.
Thomas Suson and Jeremy Roldan were Co-Players of the Game.

Van College vs OKM for the Title

#4 Seed Okanagan Mission Huskies, with a late push sent the semi-final game into overtime, then ended #9 Seed Burnaby South Rebels big run from the foul line, winning by 7.

#2 Seed Vancouver College Fighting Irish held off a 3rd quarter surge by the #11 Seed Sir Charles Tupper Tigers, who closed it within 7, but the Irish turned it up another gear in the 4th quarter and won by 18.

We were very pleased to have had Angus Reid, former All-Star Offensive Lineman for the BC Lions, (and Simon Fraser University and Vancouver College Alumini), as the guest speaker at our Banquet.

He gave a great talk with a focus on “Talent and Character”. Angus then signed copies of his best selling book, “Thank You Coach” for each of the Head Coaches at the Tournament.

Brief Bio – Angus Reid is a Richmond born and raised native who played professional football in Canadian Football league for 13 seasons with his hometown BC Lions. He was a multiple time League All-Star and 8 time Team Captain winning two Grey Cups.
Today, he travels North America speaking with Companies, Schools, and Teams about what it really takes to make it and win. He has done successful TEDx talks including “Why We Need High School Football” and “Mastering the Skill of Trust” which have garnered him both praise and respect.
Angus has also just recently released his first book – “Thank You, Coach” – which immediately became an Amazon bestseller.

Okanagan Mission Huskies used a tough defense to wear down Argyle Pipers who entered the quarter finals after an earlier triple overtime win. Sir Charles Tupper Tigers outlasted St George’s Saints. Elgin Park Orcas and Van College Fighting Irish traded 3’s for 3 quarters then Van College broke it open with a dominating 4th quarter. And in a stunning upset, #12 Seed Burnaby South Rebels took down #1 Seed WJ Mouat Hawks.

Day 2 – Opening Round Action

#2 Seed Vancouver College Fighting Irish held off a late 3rd quarter – early 4th surge by #11 Seed Sir Charles Tupper Tigers, turned up another gear and finished off a 4th quarter run to win by 18.
