Coaches Responsibilities

CONGRATULATIONS!  You’ve made it!
Without all of your hard work and sacrifice, your Team would not be here.

We strive to make this Tournament the best possible experience for your players, fans and their parents.  For many, this will be the first and may be the only end of the season Tournament that your players participate in.  We do all we can to make this event as memorable as possible.  We all know how hard it is to get to the top level in any sport at any age level.  Please participate in all the extra activities and please give your players that get recognized for All-Star Awards, the opportunity for peer and fan recognition and pictures at the Awards Presentations after the Championship game.  We present Team Awards right after your team’s final game on Sunday BUT individual awards are presented after the Championship Final.

While your Game Director is the boss of the Game and responsible for its presentation to the Teams and the fans, you are responsible for your game and all aspects of the conduct of your players, assistants, managers and fans while at this Tournament, both on and off the court.

Absolutely no inappropriate conduct or language will be tolerated.  In the case of any inappropriate behaviour, as deemed by the Tournament Chairman, one warning will be given; an additional warning will result in a Tourney expulsion with an immediate call and report to your school’s administration.  We remind all that attendance as a player, or a fan is a privilege not a right.

These are your Responsibilities:

  1. Check the website every day.  We post updates and new information on the News & Updates section.  New info from today until the end of the Tournament is being added constantly; your responsibility for checking for updates.  (Please note we are using group emails less and less).  If you are unclear about anything, please contact us immediately.
  2. Respect all deadlines for required information.  Many of our forms are now online (highlighted in red on the Resources page) making it easier to submit the required information.
  3. Start on the Resources page – Tournament General Information (Item 2) and Tournament Rules (Item 3).  All other forms and documents support this.
  4. The Coaches Meeting and Seeding Conference call will review Tourney Info as well as establish seeding and first game times.  Seeding Conf Call Info (Item 12) and Seeding Worksheets (Items 13 a, b, c, d) will help you during the Conference call.
  5. A letter for Parents and Fans will be sent to you after the Coaches Meeting for distribution prior to the start of the Tournament.
  6. A Team Invoice will be emailed to you and your Athletic Director Feb 27 or Feb 28.  Upon your arrival, please find Alan Kaselj at Centennial and present your 2 school banners, banquet door prizes and cheques.  Your team merch will be ready for pickup as well.  You will be required to sign for your merch so please check for correct numbers and sizes before you sign the receipt.
  7. Pre/Post Game Duties – Schedules are tight so be aware of times.
    a. Incoming Coach
        i.  Keep your team off the floor and bench until post game handshakes and Player of the Game (PoG) are completed.  Have your team assembled and  ready at the baseline by their bench.  Your players should stack their gear and bags on the baseline away from the outgoing teams gear, so that your players can begin their warmups as soon as the PoG is awarded.  Don’t be bouncing balls while waiting there.

ii.  Keep your team off the bench until the other team has cleared all of their gear from the bench and the Game Director waves your team in. Usually at   this point your players are on the floor warming up and the managers move the team gear to the bench from the baseline. Follow this and we do not         waste time later looking for missing and lost player or team gear.

iii.  Ensure that all information on the scoresheet is accurate before you sign off.  The names are copied from the website team roster page several       hours prior to game time.

iv.  10 minutes prior to Game Time, there is a pre-game meeting with the Game Director, both Referees and all Coaches including your Assistant Coaches/Sponsors in front of the scorer’s bench, to introduce yourselves and review all game responsibilities.  This happens at each of your games.

      v.  The Game Director will remind the Referees about the Game Sportsmanship assessment and you as Head Coach will be reminded about the Player Game Assessment that occurs each game.
See Item C4.  Each Coach selects two players from each team for all-star voting based on the game that was just played.  If the game is close, the Game Director will get your Player Assessment at the buzzer.  If the game outcome is clear, the Game Director will get your assessment with a few minutes left in the game.

vi.  You will also be told if the teams or starters will be announced at the start of your game.  Starting player line-ups are announced Saturday night and full team lineups are announced Sunday afternoon and subject to on time game schedules, this may also occur prior to other games.  We try to get all players on the teams not just starters announced at least once during the Tournament.

vii.  You and your assistants will be reminded about the High Standards of Conduct (including language directed both on court and at your bench).

viii.  Back at the bench, remind your Assistants, Managers and Players of our absolute zero tolerance for poor sportsmanship and bad language.  As Head Coach, you and your team will be held responsible for the conduct of your players and fans.

ix.  Remind players that only 1 warning will be given.

       x. Players should have shirts tucked in when entering and during the game.

         b. Outgoing Coach
              i.  Player Assessment – Item C4.  If the game is close the Game Director will get your Player Assessment at the buzzer.  If the game outcome is clear,                    the Game Director will get your assessment with a few minutes left in the game.

ii.  After handshakes, have your team line up in front of your bench not on the floor, facing towards center circle, for the PoG presentation.
Please show respect to your opposition.

iii.  Then you have about 1 minute (maybe 2) to clear (and clean, water spills cleaned, trash collected) and team chairs straightened up for the incoming              team.  Our schedule is tight and get your players quickly away from the bench and into the dressing room or stands to change shoes etc.

         c.  Incoming and Outgoing Coaches
              i.  Inspect your Dressing Room upon your arrival and then again on your departure. Please ensure you do this, as any damages found will be charged                       to the last team in the change room unless damage was previously reported.

FAN CONDUCT – There has been a disturbing number of problems reported.  Coach, it is important to remind you that your Team will be held responsible for the conduct and language of your fans.  There is zero tolerance and only 1 warning shall be given.  A second incident will result in ejection from this Tournament.  We emphasize that participating or watching these Games is a privilege not a right

     8. Bench Supplies
          a.
Ice water in water coolers is provided at the end of each bench. Please have your players bring their own water bottles that can be filled from the coolers. The coolers are topped up after each game.
        b. Ice chests are provided at the official’s table with bagged ice for any cooling required.
        c. A large trashcan is provided at the end of your bench.
        d.  Bring extra towels for water spillage.
        e. Bring your own basketballs for warmups, make sure they are marked.

     9. Specialty Events
         a. If your player enters these events, the player should know the rules. The Event Rules are posted on the website.  We have a lot of players and a short amount of time to run through the eliminations and we will only answer clarifications not run through the rules.  Coach, please take the time with those players of yours that go in these events.
         b.  If your player enters the eliminations, and makes the Final 4, the player is expected to participate in the Final 4 on Sunday.
         c.  The player will be given a chance to participate in any of the eliminations even if the player’s team is playing when the specialty event is scheduled, and the player’s game is not finished yet. We will fit the player in right after the player’s game ends.
         d. Please let a Tourney Director know in advance, if there are any time conflicts.

    10.  Attendance
Please respect Opening Ceremonies and Awards Presentations as well as entries into the Specialty events.  Participating at all levels makes this a better experience for your players.  Your attendance is expected at the Awards Presentation.  If that is a problem for your team, please contact Rob Slavik prior to completing and submitting your Team Registration if you wish to discuss this.

Please note that the 27th ANNUAL GRADE 9 BOYS BASKETBALL INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT (formerly the BC High School Annual Grade 9 Boys Invitational Provincial Basketball Championships), are conducted as a not-for-profit event by the volunteer organizers.  100% of all monies (Tourney Fees, Gate, Merchandise, Concession, Advertising and Sponsorships etc.), are directly received by the Host School for the benefit of their basketball programs.

We expect that all coaches, team staff, players and fans will conduct themselves in a manner that is a credit to their Teammates, their Coaches, their Schools and the Game.  We are certain that you will enjoy yourselves and this great game.  Once again, Congratulations, work hard and have fun.  And Thank You for all you do.
