Day 3 – Championship and Consolation Round.

#1 Seed Vancouver College came back from a late game deficit to defeat Wildcard & #12 Seed Burnaby Central 69 – 66 in the most exciting game to date of these 2022 Championships.

On the other side of the Championship draw in another strong game, #2 Seed Sullivan Heights was defeated by #3 Seed Heritage Woods 79 – 64.

Sunday afternoon, its the Vancouver College Fighting Irish vs the Heritage Woods Kodiaks for the 2022 Championship.

At the Banquet

Awards and recognition with a good food and many door prizes including 20 pairs of tickets to the Fraser Valley Bandits Basketball games at their new home at the Langley Events Center and 60 pairs of tickets to BC Lions games.

We welcomed the well known and highly regarded Coach, Rich Chamber, as our Guest Speaker, this being his third appearance.

A player from each team, displaying the highest leadership and dedication to his team as selected by his Head Coach, was acknowledged with the Coaches Award (sponsored by the Fraser Valley Bandits).

A Builders Award was made in recognition of the dedication and work in starting and developing the BC Grade 9 Boys Provincial Championships that began 25 years ago.  Terry Lescisin (Semiahmoo, Athletic Director, ret’d), Jim Lamond (now Principal at Belmont Secondary), Ross Tomlinson (former Basketball BC and now President of Tri-City Basketball, formerly the Steve Nash League) and Steve Pettifer (Centennial teacher and basketball Coach, ret’d and longtime Director of the BC Gr9 Provincials) were recognized as the Builders. The Award noted that since the BC Gr9’s inception, 4,752 players of 396 teams representing 120 schools have been a part of these Championships.

The Rich Goulet Award – For Basketball Lifetime Achievement was presented for the years 2021 to Ken “Doc” Dockendorf of Maple Ridge and 2022 Richie Chambers of Centennial and Terry Fox by David Goulet, representing the family of the recently passed great coach and leader, Rich Goulet.

Day 1 – Opening Round Action

Proving that this year was the hardest to seed, #19 and #20 seeded teams won.  #19 seed Elgin Park Orcas over #14 seed Mark Isfeld Ice, 63 – 48 and #20 seed McMath Wildcats defeating #13 seed Charles Tupper Tigers 70 – 51.

Burnaby Mountain Lions took an early lead and beat Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers 52 – 26. And OKM Huskies won a tight game by defeating Richmond Colts 51 – 43.

Who can enter? Any Grade 9 or Grade 8 player from any team that did not qualify for the BC Gr9 Provincials.

Thank you to the Fraser Valley Bandits of the Canadian Elite Basketball League, the CEBL.

1. No entry fee or cost.

2. $500 Scholarship to the winning team. Top 4 teams receive Provincial trophies and Championship t-shirts.

3. ELIGIBILITY – any Grade 9 player who is not in the Grade 9 Provincials. (example- if you just played in the BC Junior Boys Provincials- you are eligible.) You must all be from the same school. You may have up to 2 grade 8’s per team.

4. Round Robin and Elimination Games start at 9:00 Saturday March 5 at Semiahmoo and Earl Marriot gyms and go all day. The top 4 teams from each gym advancing to the semi – finals Final Eight. Round robin play continues to a Final Four. The Final Four return the next day, Sunday March 6 at 1200 to play for gold in the main gym just prior to the Provincial Final last 2 games.

Michael and I would like to thank all of the participants in what had to be the hardest seeding meeting ever in our history. The triple hit of no grade 8 play last year, minimal travel this year and minimal zone interplay made this our toughest seeding, let’s find out in 7 days how good were our “educated” guesses.
